What is yoga nidra?

Yoga nidra is not about yoga poses, stretches, or exercises. This is a meditative practice done in a comfortable resting position and designed to help you move through deeper states of consciousness, to calm your nervous system, and enhance your overall well being. Sessions tend to last 40 minutes and can be done one-to-one with a practitioner or in a small group. There is something special about joining together with others, both in-person or online, and having an expansive experience together. Individual sessions are also great because they can be tailored to your particular wellness goals and desired outcomes.

Yoga nidra has its roots in ancient India, although similar meditative practices exist within other cultures as well. You will be guided to a mental state between wakefulness and sleep–a powerful state of mind known for its impact on physical and mental rejuvenation, restoration, expansive states of mind, and learning.

What are the benefits of yoga nidra?

As a comprehensive meditative and relaxation approach, yoga nidra is particularly beneficial for those struggling with:

  • insomnia
  • stress
  • anxiety
  • pain
  • depression

Yoga nidra is very accessible, hard to do wrong, and very easy to incorporate into your wellness routine. Additional benefits of yoga nidra include:

  • lowers blood pressure
  • improves heart rate variability
  • improves habitual thought patterns
  • improves mind-body awareness
  • enhances healing and physical rejuvenation
  • promotes a deeper connection to values and goal

What can you expect during a yoga nidra session?

Yoga Nidra is generally done in a lying down posture called Savasana or corpse pose, which means lying on your back with your arms by your sides. However, you are guided to rest in whatever position is most comfortable for you. Please bring a mat (e.g. a yoga mat) or blanket to lie down on and wear loose, comfortable clothing, including socks, as you may cool down during the session. We have blankets and pillows at the clinic for your use.

It is best to leave an hour between eating and joining the class in order to maximise comfort, benefit, and enjoyment of the session.

In our sessions we will move step-by-step, exploring various states of consciousness with the goal of muscular relaxation, mental expansiveness, emotional release, and deep, restorative rest. Together we will create an inner oasis of relaxation where you can develop valuable skills for handling stress, tension, and fatigue.

We are excited to be adding yoga nidra group sessions to our schedule. Individual in-person sessions and virtual sessions are also available upon request. Sessions are led by Carly Belzberg who is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and Holistic Energy Worker. For more information or any questions please contact Carly at carlymyrest@gmail.com
