At My Rest, we are dedicated to providing holistic and effective treatments to help our clients achieve wellness and balance in their lives. One of the specialized and highly effective services we offer is Motor Point Acupuncture, a technique that targets specific motor points in the body to alleviate pain, restore function, and promote overall well-being.

What is Motor Point Acupuncture?

Motor Point Acupuncture is a form of acupuncture that specifically targets motor points, which are areas on the body where nerves enter muscles. This technique involves inserting hair-thin needles into these motor points to elicit a therapeutic response. Once the needle is inserted, a small, handheld electrostimulation device is touched to the handle of the needle to stimulate small muscle twitches. By targeting these specific points, Motor Point Acupuncture can help release muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote healing in the affected areas.

What are the benefits of Motor Point Acupuncture?

Motor Point Acupuncture is used largely to address muscle-related pain, which can include sports injuries, accidents, muscle tension, repetitive strain injuries, poor posture pain, and stress-induced tension.

  • Pain relief: Motor Point Acupuncture can help alleviate both acute and chronic pain by targeting specific motor points associated with the affected areas.
  • Improved muscle function: By targeting motor points, this technique can help improve muscle coordination, strength, and flexibility.
  • Enhanced sports performance: Athletes often benefit from Motor Point Acupuncture to address sports-related injuries, improve recovery time, and enhance overall performance.

How does Motor Point Acupuncture work?

Motor Point Acupuncture likely works through a few mechanisms.

  • It targets the nerve related to the muscle that’s creating the pain and dysfunction. By needling the motor point and stimulating the nerve, a stretch receptor in the muscle contracts and then produces a reflex relaxation, like a muscle reset.
  • Stimulating the nerve creates an electrical potential that helps the nerve function normally again.
  • By resetting the muscle tension, it softens the tight muscle “knots” that cause pain and limit range of motion.
  • The insertion of the needle creates a microinjury to the tissue, causing the body to increase blood circulation to the area and stimulating the body’s natural healing process.

What can you expect during a Motor Point Acupuncture session?

During a Motor Point Acupuncture session at My Rest, our licensed acupuncturist will conduct a thorough assessment of your condition and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. The session will involve the insertion of hair-thin needles into the targeted motor points, which will cause a muscle twitch sensation. Note that it is not a painful sensation and because the muscle response is loosening and lengthening, many clients find the experience to be relaxing and rejuvenating.

Our registered acupuncturists will likely choose other points along with Motor Point Acupuncture to address your overall health and wellness, reduce stress, and improve your body’s healing mechanisms.

To note:

Two of My Rest’s registered acupuncturists are trained in Motor Point Acupuncture treatment: Lynn Plautz and Ala Wroblewska. They offer Motor Point Acupuncture under the heading of “Acupuncture Plus.” If you’re new to acupuncture services at My Rest, book in the Initial Visit Acupuncture treatment first: https://myrest.janeapp.com/#/discipline/1/treatment/3 (pick Lynn or Ala for Motor Point Acupuncture).
